Fri os fra det onde

Directed by Ole Bornedal

Synopsis

In search of a new lifestyle, Johannes and his wife Pernille leave the city and move with their two children to Johannes’ childhood town in the country. When Johannes’ drunken brother Lars accidently runs over Anna, a local, and plants false evidence pointing at the emigrant Alain, Johannes stands up to defend Alain. But it comes with a price.

Over the course of a day a small town in Denmark erupts into violence after the death of one its people ..

Loved the color grading on this I could just watch the slightly dark and desaturated crystal blue sky shots in it all day long .. the characters were interesting enough and the build up was good .. although at times I was just a little impatient with this one but sometimes that’s just me and not the films fault 🙃 ... a decent twists or two along the way and a pretty wild final third was worth the wait though..

This was a weird movie in many ways, which made me have some very mixed opinions on it, but it was overall pretty fascinating.
The story follows the people of a small town and all the chaos that ensues after a woman accidentally is killed and the blame is put on another man.
The storytelling was a bit jumpy, starting out with a lot of narrating and quick editing before ditching the narration and having more long and drawn out scenes.
This also made the pacing a bit messy and it had many slow moments and it took a long time for the story to really get going and for the excitement to start, though I really enjoyed the ending,…

Maximal unbequem.

  • Review by Grimbo ★★★★

Danish thriller dealing with two brothers, one a successful lawyer and the other a scumbucket.

The scumbucket frames a gentle giant after he kills a local woman and things go to shit after this!

    Possible Spoilers:-

This ends with a siege in a house with the lawyer trying to protect the gentle giant from a baying mob. This all seemed very familiar to me but I can't put my finger on it. I don't think it was the Straw Dogs remake or the recent Jason Statham hillbilly revenge thriller but I've defo seen sumat like this before!

The World Is More Than Enough - 30 Countries In 30 Days Challenge (10 / 30) - Denmark

SOME SPOILERS, BUT ONE BIG ONE ESPECIALLY

'A Game Of Two Halves' is a footballing cliche that is all too often heard, even to this day, to describe a game that has a somewhat different flow or result to it in its two separate halves.

It seems fairly apt to describe Deliver Us From Evil, a Danish thriller from director Ole Bornedal (best known for Nightwatch and its subsequent US remake as well as the recent US horror film The Possession) in similar terms. The problem with this analogy is that I've never seen a game of football that not so much…

  • Review by PhillyFilmFan ★★★

This shows how quickly an angry, racist mob can can become a violent threat to society, even to the point of murdering a police officer who gets in there way. So, uh, pretty relevant. Although I don't buy the late-stage twist.

Oh, look. It's the pretentious version of Straw Dogs.

  • Review by Christian Fecht ★★★★ 1

  • Review by Phil Newton ★★★★½ 1

Terrifying thriller from Ole Bornedal (The Possession) set in a rural Danish town. Lars is having a bad day – he’s just found out that his girlfriend is pregnant, he’s drunk, and he’s just hit someone with his articulated lorry. Lars makes a decision which will ultimately affect the whole town as the country fair kicks off, especially upwardly mobile couple Johannes (his brother) and Pernille, Bosnian refugee Alain, and troubled war-vet Ingvar. The build up is intense and frustrating as you curse Lars’s actions, and it only gets worse in the second half when the film strays into Straw Dogs territory. Masterfully handled, it really puts the viewer through the wringer.

  • Review by Moria ★★★½

The 2000s saw a huge revival of interest in 1970s Backwoods Brutality cinema on the big screen with remakes of classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave and homages such as House of 1000 Corpses, Wrong Turn, Wolf Creek and Macabre. Nowhere has this been as popular or as bloodthirstily enacted as it has in European countries who have turned out the likes of High Tension, The Ordeal, Sheitan, Them, Frontier(s), King of the Hill and Eden Lake.

Amidst this, the Danish-made Deliver Us From Evil seems to have been almost directly construed as a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, the progenitor of the…

  • Review by Doktor_Muffel ★½
